Hello friends! Feel free to stop by my StoryGraph for an impromptu review: Sure, I’ll Join Your Cult by Mara Bamford, published by Gallery Books and released this past Tuesday, September 5. This book was so compelling I started it the morning it arrived on my e-reader by preorder—and finished it today! What?! I do give some credit to the new ADHD meds (update: I’ve been scrupulous about my caffeine consumption since The Incident™️ mentioned in the last entry and everything’s been great!), but truly, it’s a matter of Bamford’s gift for storytelling. Her pacing is obviously honed from years of standup, but she has a true knack for expression and a bracing honesty that is compelling as well as funny. As a middle-aged person who has never really had a straightforward ambition—or the ability to be swayed by anyone to attempt having one—I’m grateful that Bamford did take the direction urged upon her and found a path for herself. To me, at least, she represents hope. Saint Maria of the Weirdos Who Can’t Hold Down A Regular Job Anymore, please have my gratitude! I didn’t mention in that review but my favorite chapters were 9 (Overeaters Anonymous) and 23 (Obligatory Suicide Disclaimer), the latter of which is really earnest and tender, a quality that cradles even the oddest of her comedy and the darkest of her jokes. With it being Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, like I keep harping on about, I really appreciated it.
Til next time! Be kind to yourselves and do something that makes you happy ♥️
P.S.: I drew myself a little accomplishment ribbon for reading a book in four days. Treat yourself to little silly rewards! Be your own validation, it’s fun!
